When the Soldiers' and Sailors' Home was in the planning stages in 1886, the city of Sandusky, Ohio, promised to develop two avenues, each 100 feet wide, between the city and the Home, as well as to extend street car lines to the site. The city side of the avenue was called Homeville, where many civilian employees of the Home resided.
