Description:

Second growth stand of shagbark hickory which came into beech-maple woodland as a result of grazing. The hickory nuts apparently were disseminated by squirrels and the seedlings persisted in the face of grazing. Note the sugar maple saplings which have come in under the hickory after the livestock were removed. Item #5275
