Scotch pine - showing "extra terminal whorl" which developed on current years. Stem from buds which broke dormancy early. Notice natural bud set on the short stems. Central bud usually remains dormant, although not apparently injured (as by shoot moth). Not previously sheared. When this phenomenon occurs laterals of the same whorl (to right) also are affected.
