Description:
The iron Canadian side-wheel "Spartan" was built in 1864-1865 in Montreal, Quebec, by Gilbert Shipyard for the Richelieu and Ontario Navigation Company. She initially operated on Owen Sound, was damaged by fire in Kingston in 1874, and then extensively rebuilt. In the fall of 1885, the "Spartan" was wrecked on Caribou Island, Lake Superior. She was salvaged and reconstructed in Detroit, then plied on the St. Lawrence River for quite some time. In 1905, she was lengthened and rechristened the "Belleville," an appellation she maintained whilst operating for the Canada Steamship Line; she was abandoned in 1921.
