Almon Ruggles (1770 - 1840) came from his Connecticut home in 1805 to survey the "fire sufferers' land." He was the original surveyor of what is now Ohio's Erie and Huron Counties. As partial payment for his work, Ruggles was able to purchase one full section - 640 acres, or one square mile - anywhere on the shore of Lake Erie.
