The Detroit Dry Dock Company, Detroit, Michigan, built the "Sainte Ignace" in 1888 for the Mackinaw Transit Company. On each side of the ship was a track capable of holding five railcars. She ferried railcars between St. Ignace and Mackinaw City, Michigan. Because she was an ice breaker, the ship sailed all year.
