dc.description Anna McMeens of Sandusky, Ohio, was Jay Cooke's housekeeper on Gibraltar Island from 1864 to 1891. She was the widow of Dr. Robert McMeens, a surgeon during the Civil War. Even though Dr. McMeens died during the war, Anna continued working in hospitals - without pay - until the Civil War ended. She often accompanied Jay Cooke to Washington, D. C. While he conducted financial matters with the Treasury Department, Anna visited sick and wounded soldiers in the hospitals located in government buildings throughout the city.
