dc.description The mouth of the Ashtabula, "river of many fish," creates a natural harbor on Lake Erie. Still a major coal port,the harbor also provided an escape route for slaves traveling the Underground Railroad to Canada in the mid-1800s. The town of Ashtabula contained several "stops," or havens, on the Rairoad.
