Description:
A "Buddy Poppy" is pinned on Fremont, Ohio, Mayor Walter R. Oxley by Tami Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Al Witt. It was part of the Annual Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Buddy Poppy Day. Buddy Poppies were first introduced on Memorial Day 1922. The following year, the VFW decided that they would serve as a form of financial assistance to veterans, as the poppies would be assembled by disadvantaged and disabled soldiers who, in turn, would be paid for their work.
