dc.description |
The palatial Victory Hotel at Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island opened in 1892. There was seating capacity for 800 dinner guests and the hotel could comfortably accommodate 625 guests. Its owners believed that the Victory had the potential to rival the "watering holes of the East," but cost overruns and fewer guests than anticipated created financial problems. The Cooke family watched its construction and development with interest. Rev. Henry Cooke wrote in the Gibraltar Record that "the Hotel Victory... is open again this year and seems to be flourishing too. We [Esther Cooke, her sons, and nieces] sampled their ginger ale and sarsaparilla which we can therefore recommend...." Interestingly, in 1887, Jay Cooke had proposed erecting a $100,000 hotel on Peach Point. Jay's plan was to purchase all of the west woods, make a grand park and a carriage drive along the shoreline, with cottages to house summer residents. The project never materialized. Perhaps the announcement of the impending construction of Hotel Victory deterred investors. |
