dc.description The Connecticut Land Company bought about three million acres of northeast Ohio land along the shore of Lake Erie. In 1796 the company sent a surveying party led by General Moses Cleaveland to explore the area. Two of the 52 explorers were so enchanted by the area at the mouth of the Ashtabula River that they stayed. The town was officially founded in 1803.
