When white settlers found Cold Creek in the early 19th century, they thought the creek haunted. No fish swam in the cold, clear waters. The creek was not haunted, but its water, rising through springs - or holes - from underground rivers, had no oxygen. It was not until mills were built along the fast-moving stream that the water was aerated by the motion of water wheels. The creek could then sustain fish.
