Description:
Rev. Henry Cooke recorded in the Gibraltar Record that this is "the first picture...which represents dear Father at Gibraltar." Patriarch Jay Cooke (1821-1905) stands among his family at Cooke Castle. For nearly sixty years, Jay Cooke visited Gibraltar each spring and fall. He hunted on the islands and fished for black bass in Lake Erie. At other times of the year, Cooke opened the island to clergymen and their families, who used the island as a retreat.
