This photograph of Gibraltar Island by Rev. Henry E. Cooke was taken from Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island. The reverend declared that this was the "first time the artist [Rev. Henry E. Cooke] was enabled to get a photograph of the island from Put-in-Bay, in which the house [Cooke Castle] and tower could be plainly seen." The island is a seven and one-half acre limestone outcropping just across the harbor from South Bass Island. After Jay Cooke's death in 1905, visits by family members declined. In 1925, the island was sold to Julius Stone, who donated it to The Ohio State University to use as a biological laboratory. The Cooke Castle, under restoration by The Ohio State University, appears much as it did in Jay Cooke's time. Its Italianate design coupled with the octagonal tower bearing crenellations was unusual in home construction in Ohio during the mid-1860's.
