At 4:30 A.M., August 17, 1906, the schooner WILLIAM A. YOUNG became stranded off the east side of Kelleys Island. The schooner was freed six weeks later by three tug boats. Built in Marine City, Michigan, in 1883, the vessel frequently carried cargoes of coal. In 1911, the WILLIAM A. YOUNG sprung a leak and sank six miles southeast of Middle Island in Lake Huron. She was bound for Wisconsin with a cargo of coal from Huron, Ohio.
