dc.description Built as the Puritan in 1901 at Craig Shipbuilding in Toledo, Ohio, the ship was lost on her maiden voyage as the George M. Cox May 27, 1933. Sailing on Lake Superior from Duluth. Minnesota to Isle Royale, Michigan, she struck the rocks at Rock of Ages Shoal. The 125 passengers were rescued and spent the rest of the foggy night on the spiral stairway of the Rock of Ages Shoal lighthouse. The George M. Cox slid off the rocks and still lies at the bottom of Lake Superior.
