Some manufacturers claimed that gas powered ice field saws could cut through ice twelve inches thick, replacing five horse-drawn plows. Despite their efficiency, gas powered cutting saws could not save the natural ice harvesting industry. The last harvest, on Sandusky Bay was during the winter of 1941.
