Glenn Curtiss flying along the Cedar Point beach during his record-setting 1910 flight. The Hudson flier was constructed of canvas, bamboo poles, and wire mounted on three bicycle wheels. At the back of the plane was a 30 horse-power motor that averaged 15 miles per gallon. In case the plane crashed, Curtiss wore a bicycle inner tube around his chest as a "life preserver."
