dc.description Reverend Henry Cooke and Cooke relatives frequently rowed to Green Island for picnics. The island is located just west of South Bass Island. Cooke took this image during a picnic in August 1890. He recorded that the "watermelon battle was a long and fierce one .... at its close the Watermelon Brigade disappeared from history, fearful was the carnage ...."
