Shouts of "Help, Help!" coming from Lake Erie in the evening of August 11, 1893 spurred the family at Cooke Castle into rescue efforts. While three men rowed out into the lake, Dorothea Barney "brought out all the lamps on to the back porch....to turn Gibraltar into a Light House."
