dc.description This view of Harry Atwood shows him taking off from Sandusky Bay in his Burgess Wright. Atwood was part of the small circle of individuals who learned to fly from the Wright brothers. Starling Burgess, an America's Cup yacht builder, became the sole American licensee of the Wrights. Burgess paid the Wrights $1000 for each plane built and a $100 royalty each time a plane was used in a flying exhibition. Burgess opened the Burgess School of Aviaiton in May 1911, with Harry Atwood as the instructor. Atwood had finished flight school only a week earlier.
