When the dam built at Ballville gave way under the rushing waters of the flooded Sandusky River, damage to the structure itself and to buildings near the river bank was extensive. Doctor Orange Thomas watched his horse and buggy carried down stream, but he was able to hold on to an iron post until the rush subsided and he could wade to dry land.
