The serenity of Castalia, Ohio, was shattered in 1907 by an outbreak of cerebro-spinal meningitis. Residents thought the cause was water polluted by the electric railway and fled the village. The epidemic claimed 13 lives. The state Board of Health determined Castalia's water was not the source of the disease.
