Construction began on a new high school in Fremont in mid-1909. On the evening of Friday, December 3, 1909 the second and third floors of the building's taller center section collapsed. One engineer's theory about the cause of the collapse was that the masonry work was too weak to support the iron and steel supports, 17-inch-thick brick walls, and reinforced concrete.
