dc.description This paper discusses a practice-based research that is developing through the pedagogical approach of 'embedding' doctoral students within the context of professional architectural practice. In this pilot study, the students research not only as observers, but as active participants in the design process, introducing research tools for communication and representation from the academy into practice. The research program evolved in response to prior involvement in practice-based research which suggested a serious gap in understanding innovation and change between academy and profession.
