La psicoterapia institucional plantea encrucijadas clínicas de orden ético cuando el Estado interviene regulando la economía del síntoma psíquico. A partir de mi práctica clínica institucional en Jackson Heights, Queens-NY, plantearé algunas reflexiones criticas sobre los efectos clínicos que se derivan de asumirla gratuidad y la ayuda económica del Estado como beneficios. En particular me detendré en los programas Medicaid y Disability, como casos ejemplares del alcance ético que adquiere la necesidad de cuestionar su estatuto de beneficio. Lo anterior toma relevancia cuando en Chile comienzan a implementarse políticas de salud mental que participan de la misma lógica.
