En España existe la extendida opinión de que la violencia domestica es un problema en auge, y que las estadísticas existentes no hacen más que confirmarlo. En este artículo se hace un repaso a los fundamentos empíricos de esta opinión. El resultado es la triste evidencia de que las fuentes de datos existentes en nuestro país no permiten demostrar o refutar dicho aumento. Aún más, si los datos existentes sugieren alguna tendencia es precisamente la contraria, y ello coincide con lo observado en otros países que sí disponen de fuentes de la consistencia y antigüedad suficientes. Se revela necesaria una mejora en la conceptualización y medición de la violencia doméstica, y una mejor distinción entre su incidencia y su visibilidad social.In Spain it is almost universally assumed that the volume of domestic and gender violence is on the increase. However, it is clear that we do not have even the most basic data to be able to make such a judgement. Although it appears radical to insist on the increase in domestic violence, a deeper analysis suggests that this is not the case. On the contrary, more emphasis needs to be put on the one hand on the careful and consistent definition of what consitutes gender violence and domestic violence, and oon the other hand, on the distinction bewteen the existence of such violence and its social visibility.Peer reviewed
