Open access in Spain is still an emerging movement, however during the last three or four years it has grown robustly with more frequent initiatives related either to institutional open access repositories and open/free journals. The 154 registered signatories of the Berlin Declaration include five Spanish universities or research institutions, which it is not a big rate, but awareness of institutional commitment to open access is increasing sharply. ROAR and DOAR have in their records 13 and 5 open access repositories, respectively, which represent only a 1.4% and 2% of the whole IRs registered in those directories. Most current repositories started as repositories for theses but some of them have evolved to institutional repositories where to archive preprints, post-prints, conference proceedings, and any other research documents published by their own staff. Open or free access journals are not exactly “new journals” but former printed journals that are currently free online and in most cases published by public institutions or learned societies. Examples of open access journals directories or digital libraries such as Scielo Spain, Dialnet, e-revistas, RaCO or Dspace.revistas contain free online full text articles. Those and other projects will be described together with some figures which show perception and response of researchers towards open access to scholarly publications. |
