Description: The ice and snow, a product of Sandusky's cold winters, provided not only seasonal employment but also recreation in the form of sleighing. Sleigh races were a tradition in Sandusky, Ohio. Central Avenue from Monroe Street to North Depot, wide enough for horses to race for abreast for a half mile, was known as the "speedway."
