Offices for the Kelleys Island Lime & Transport Company were built at the North Quarry. The company became the largest employer and landowner on Kelleys Island between 1886 and 1942. Eventually, the company became the largest producer of lime in the world. Quarrying was economical on Kelleys Island because the loose, thin soil could be removed easily. Kelleys Island Lime & Transport Company quarried stone for buildings, piers, and breakwaters. Later the company produced lime (calcium oxide).-
