Das Hafenprojekt erscheint im Hinblick auf steigende Schiffsgrößen und zunehmenden internationalen Güteraustausch gesamtwirtschaftlich sinnvoll. Die öffentliche Hand ist jedoch voraussichtlich nicht in der Lage, die gesamte Hafeninfrastruktur zu finanzieren. Die Ansätze, Private zu beteiligen, sollten weiter verfolgt werden, damit diese das Auslastungsrisiko mit tragen. Bezüglich des Standortes scheint Wilhelmshaven wegen der größeren Kapazitätsreserven leichte Vorteile gegenüber Cuxhaven zu haben. The paper analyses the perspectives for a new container port at the German North Sea coast. In view of the expected further enlargement of container ship sizes and sustained growth in international trade, the port seems to be an economically sound project. Public funds, however, will probably not be sufficient to finance the new port’s infrastructure as a whole. Attempts to raise part of the infrastructure financing from private sources should be encouraged. In this way, the economic risks could be shared between the public and private sector. As for the internal German competition among Wilhelmshaven and Cuxhaven as location of the project, Wilhelmshaven appears to have a slight advantage over its competitor, mainly because of its greater capacity reserves. |
