A case study of Spanish Senior University researchers in Geology is performed. Methodology is based on the combination of a mail survey carried out among a defined set of researchers, and a bibliometric study of their scientific output. Results provide support for the hypothesis that consolidation of research teams would result in a greater facility to establish contacts and collaborations with colleagues, that could benefit all members of the team, fostering their participation in funded projects and favouring their potential to publish in international mainstream journals. RESUMEN. Se analiza en qué medida la colaboración científica y el rendimiento individual de los investigadores están influenciados por el nivel de consolidación del equipo al que pertenecen. Se estudia el caso de los investigadores de la universidad española en el campo de la Geología. La metodología está basada en la combinación de una encuesta postal realizada entre un grupo de investigadores, y un estudio bibliométrico de su producción científica. Los resultados apoyan la hipótesis de que la consolidación de los equipos de investigación repercutiría en una mayor facilidad de los científicos para establecer contactos y colaboraciones con otros colegas, lo que beneficiaría a todos los componentes del equipo, favoreciendo su participación en proyectos financiados e incrementando su potencial para publicar en las principales revistas internacionales.
